$username not visible

$username not visible

I am use version 3.1
My problems its: on the box login_1.tpl i have this part of code:

<strong>Welcome
<?=$username?>
</strong><br>

but in the box its visible only the word Welcome and the username of the member its missing.

Any suggestion?
